Big Bay & Bloubergstrand

The postcard. You're boosting on the south-easter with Table Mountain behind you. Big Bay is where King of the Air is held, and Kite Beach and Dolphin Beach run south from here.

Wind

The SE Cape Doctor blows side-shore to side-offshore down this coast from November to March. It usually starts around late morning and builds to 20–35 kn by mid-afternoon. December to February is the core. When it's really on, a 7 m is a lot of kite. S and SW days blow more onshore and lighter.

Water & level

There's real Atlantic swell, so you get wave riding and big air. The water is cold, 12–16°C, because of upwelling, so you need a 4/3 or 5/4 even in midsummer. It suits confident riders. Beginners should start at Langebaan or with a school on lighter days.

Launch & beach

The launch at Big Bay itself is small, especially at high tide, and gets busy. Kite Beach, a few km south, has more space. Launch on the sand, never on the grass verges or near the car park.

Watch out

Rocks downwind of Big Bay, a gusty and strong wind that builds fast through the afternoon, pebbles on landing, and cold water if you end up swimming. Sharks are occasionally spotted, but there are no recorded attacks on kiters here.
