Langebaan Lagoon

Cape Town's flat-water escape. It's a big, shallow, turquoise lagoon about 90 minutes up the West Coast, and noticeably warmer than the ocean.

Wind

The same summer wind system as Cape Town, usually arriving here more from the south and steadier, 15–28 kn from November to March. It's often windy here when Cape Town is too gusty or too strong.

Water & level

Flat, shallow, sandy water that is several degrees warmer than Table Bay. It's the best place in the area to learn, practise freestyle or take a first foil session. Shark Bay inside the national park is the famous ultra-shallow, turquoise corner.

Launch & rules

The lagoon is part of the West Coast National Park and has zoned areas. Kiting is only allowed in designated zones, and Shark Bay requires park entry. Check current rules with the local kite schools before you go.

Watch out

Very shallow sandbanks at low tide, zone boundaries, and a long drive back after sunset. Take water and sunscreen. There's not much shade.
