Dakhla Lagoon, Atlantic coast

Morocco

Morocco's kite flagship is Dakhla, a long narrow peninsula in the far south where a large lagoon sits behind the Atlantic. The desert heats up, the wind is drawn in from the north-east, and the lagoon stays flat enough for beginners and for racing alike.

When to go

Most guides put the main season at April to October, with the strongest, steadiest wind in summer. Winter works too, but water and air are cooler and wind days are less predictable. Wave riders often prefer autumn.

Lagoon or ocean?

Inside the lagoon the water is flat to choppy depending on tide and distance from shore, and the wind is side-shore from the north-east. The Atlantic side has waves and cooler water and is for experienced riders, usually reached with a guide.

How reliable is this guide?
