Sotavento

Kilometres of white sand on Fuerteventura's south coast and a turquoise tidal lagoon. This is the beach the PWA World Cup made famous.

Wind

In summer the NE trade blows side-shore along the beach. It's at its most consistent from June to August, usually 18–30 kn and often more in July. Spring and September can be excellent too. Winter is mostly light, with occasional frontal days.

Water & level

On the outgoing tide a sandbar closes off a huge, shallow lagoon: flat, warm and perfect for freestyle and progression. Outside the bar there's open-ocean chop. Check the tide tables, because the lagoon only works for a few hours around mid-to-low tide.

Launch & rules

The main action is in front of the René Egli center at the north end, near the hotel. Lessons, rentals and rescue are all there. Keep clear of the windsurf race area during events.

Watch out

On the outside the wind carries you along the coast and away from the launch, so plan your downwind. The lagoon fills fast on the incoming tide, and the sun is brutal. Bring more water than you think.
