Mar Menor (Los Alcázares)
A big warm lagoon separated from the Mediterranean by a 24 km sand strip. The water is waist-deep for a long way, and the current is weak, so it is a very good place to learn and to practise freestyle.

Levante (east) gives clean cross-shore conditions across the lagoon, and the Leveche, a south-westerly, strengthens to around 15 kn most afternoons as the interior heats up. Poniente (west) is mainly offshore and not for beginners. Locals say autumn and early spring bring the strongest winds, while peak summer is lighter and busy.
Water & level
Shallow, almost current-free and flat, with only a light chop on windy days. The lagoon is warm early in the summer. Las Salinas is a 1,200 m beach known for kiting, Los Narejos is shallow with afternoon thermal wind, and Paseo Carrión is another launch spot in Los Alcázares.
Launch & rules
Launch from the beaches at Los Alcázares: Las Salinas, Los Narejos and Paseo Carrión are the most used. Local schools teach here. Check for swimming areas and signs on the day, since municipal rules change.
Watch out
Offshore Poniente days, crowded beaches in July and August, boat traffic near the marinas and swim zones that you have to stay out of.
