Blagoveshchenskaya (Anapa)

Russia's best-known kite spot. A narrow spit separates the Black Sea from the Vityazevsky estuary, so on almost any wind you can pick the side with flat water.

Wind

A thermal wind, mainly May to September. A south-westerly blows offshore at the spot and can swing to north-westerly, which makes it cross-shore. Typical days are around 15–20 kn, and the wind is on the light side, so bring your bigger kites.

Water & level

Butter flat. There are no waves and no shore-break, and the water is shallow enough that you never really get out of your depth. The spit is only about 300 m wide, so you ride in the lee of it on whichever side the wind is offshore.

Launch & rules

People camp in the dunes in summer, and a kite park with free-standing sliders runs in the water in summer. The spit is a conservation area where permanent structures are not allowed. Bottom topography can change after a storm.

Watch out

Lighter wind than you expect, a lot of people on the water in July and August, offshore sections on the sea side and changing sand after storms. We are still checking local launch and parking rules, so ask a local school first.
